At the Stake

By: Kelley Egan

At The Stake

Standing in the middle of flames

waiting to burn.

They say what i speak is evil

and this is how I will learn.

But the man with the chalky skin

knows not, his evil deeds.

The man with the sky blue eyes

ruins all he sees.

I’m talking, but no one is listening.

will my words always go unheard?

I’m thinking of what God will say

when I am forced to rejoin his herd.

They’ve beaten me with fists of ignorance

and whipped me to the bone .

Hundreds of  years etched in my back

while I lay upon their stone.

Stripped me of my cloth,

while spitting on my frame.

But, they will never change my mind,

even now standing in their flame
